The BPI told us that music consumption is on the rise in 2020, but what exactly are people listening to? Well, it turns out a whole bunch of releases on majors. Even on tape. In fact, the cassette charts are almost exclusively filled by Universal’s Polydor label.

To close the year in terms of sales and feeds, the Official Charts Company released lists revealing the most popular albums and tracks in 2020, as well as the best-selling vinyl and cassette releases, and tracks. the most widely distributed.

Independent label releases are hard to find in any of the charts – none in the top ten tracks, albums and streaming tracks. However, with a few appearances in physical product listings, this is actually an improvement over last year.

In the 2019 listings, the only independent release was a Kylie Minogue best of on tape, which was released by BMG. Do we see BMG as an independent label? Well, isn’t it? Maybe we don’t need to worry about that, as the compilation was a joint release with Warner.

In 2020, BMG managed to place a tape of Kylie in the top ten on her own, with her latest studio album ‘Disco’. The album also made the top ten on vinyl, as did two indisputably indisputable releases – “Live At The Royal Albert Hall” by Arctic Monkey and “Ultra Modern” by Idles, which slipped to number nine and ten respectively. .
