Pt S Ballesh Bhajantri will kick off the Vasantrao Deshpande Festival with a shehnai performance on July 28

Nagpur: This year, the Dr. Vasantrao Deshpande Memorial Music Festival will feature a mix of classical singing, classical dancing and musical theatre. The flagship cultural event of the South Center Zone Cultural Center (SCZCC) is celebrating its 31st anniversary. This year, the festival will be held from July 28-30, 2022 at Dr. Vasantrao Deshpande Hall, Civil Lines.
SCZCC Director Deepak Khirwadkar said live performances and audience-performer interaction will be back after the Covid gap. The SCZCC will also congratulate Vidarbha Sahitya Sangh President Manohar Mhaisalkar and veteran classical singer and music director Sadanand Pendse.
Social Worker Girish Gandhi will inaugurate the festival while Union Minister Nitin Gadkari will attend the closing day events.
“The festival will begin with a shehnai performance by Padmashri Pt S Ballesh Bhajantri, a senior disciple of shehnai legend Ustad Bismilla Khan. Well-known classical singer Ashwini Bhide-Deshpande will perform in the second half of the inaugural day,” Khirwadkar said.
Kathak Ballet ‘Ram Lala’ will be the special attraction on July 29 which will be presented by Kathak Guru Shama Bhate and his group. Yavatmal classical vocalist Prasad Khaparde will perform in the second half.
Talvadya Kacheri, a unique session of percussion instruments of various types will be the third performance on July 29. World record holder Padma Shri Pt Yella Vekateshwara Rao and his team will bring this unique instrumental treat to music lovers.
On the closing day, the popular Mumbai Marathi Sahitya Sangha sangeet natak ‘Dhadila Ram Tine Ka Vani’, a signature piece of Marathi musical theatre, will be staged. All the songs in this piece were written by poet Raja Badhe of Vidarbha.
All performances during the three-day cultural extravaganza can be attended with a season pass which costs Rs 300. Passes are available at the premises of the SCZCC.
