Westcliffe composer composes classical music pieces for all 50 states

WESTCLIFFE, Colo. — A Westcliffe composer is creating a piece of classical music for all 50 states.

Marcia Stockton said it all started after another artist issued the challenge.

“He said why don’t you write an article for each state and I thought ‘wow, that’s a pretty big challenge,'” Stockton said.

Stockton has already done six plays featuring states like California, South Dakota, New York and of course Colorado.

“Colorado is such a beautiful state, it just holds a very special place in my heart and made me think about writing this nostalgic type music,” Stockton explained.

Stockton hopes his music can bring people together at a time when so many Americans are divided.

“I’ve seen different political approaches tried and none of these approaches based on political affiliation have worked very well,” Stockton added. “I thought we needed something new and different. Music brings people together and instead of a revolution, let’s have a renaissance.

Stockton hasn’t chosen which state to compose an upcoming piece on, but she has some ideas.

“I’m writing something of a James Bond spy theme for Virginia,” Stockon said. “I have a piece called Southern lights that I could arrange for Alaska.”

All of his pieces are available to listen to on his YouTube channel.
